First Impressions of the KitchenAid 5KSMPRA 3-Piece Pasta Roller and Cutter Set
The KitchenAid 5KSMPRA 3-Piece Pasta Roller and Cutter Set is a precision made pasta roller and cutter designed exclusively for use with any model of KitchenAid Stand Mixers. The first thing you see notice is the quality of these rollers and cutters. These exceed anything else on the market.
You get three attachments and only one can be in play at any one time. If you have been used to connecting the cutters to the rollers as on manual machines, this may come as a surprise. When you feel the weight of these things it isn’t that surprising. Having all three attachments hanging off the KitchenAid stand mixer might just be too much. Having said that, each attachment is easy to attach and unattached and feels rock solid once in place. Each attachment is 15cm wide which is much wider than a standard pasta maker. This is really useful when making pasta sheets.

Operating the KitchenAid 5KSMPRA 3-Piece Pasta Roller and Cutter Set
Once set up the KitchenAid 5KSMPRA 3-Piece Pasta Roller and Cutter Set is easy to use. You can experiment with the various speed settings until you find one that works for you. Once you get the hang of it you might want to speed things up a bit but we started at speed 5 and found it a good compromise. Since the rollers and cutters are being driven by the KitchenAid Stand Mixer, you have two hands free. This is really useful and allows you to feed the pasta in through one end and catch it at the other without having to call for help from somebody else. We found that the best way to use it was in batches. We first rolled the pasta using the roller attachment and hung the resulting pasta sheets over a pasta dryer. This meant that we didn’t have to keep changing the attachments from roller to cutter each time. Once all the pasta had been rolled, we then changed the attachment to enable us to cut the pasta.
There are two cutters which enable you to produce spaghetti and fettuccini, as well as pasta sheets suitable for lasagne and ravioli etc. The action of these cutters is the best we have come across. On some other models, the cutters are sensitive to the consistency of the pasta dough. If they are two moist they fail to cut the whole way through meaning you then have to manually separate the pasta. Not so with the KitchenAid 5KSMPRA 3-Piece Pasta Roller and Cutter Set. Each strand of spaghetti and fettuccini came out separate.
The rollers have 8 settings to control the thickness of the pasta. Setting 8 is the thinest and produces an almost translucent pasta sheet which is ideal for ravioli and other stuffed dishes. For other uses except possible egg noodles, you wouldn’t need to go this thin. Setting 6 is probably as far as you would need to go or most uses.
Like all pasta makers, you should never place them in water to clean. This not only strips the device of necessary lubrication, it also can lead to rust. The recommended way of cleaning any pasta maker is to leave it to dry and then simply remove any large pieces of dough with a suitable implement. Then, use a stiff brush (provided) to get rid of any remaining dust.
We can’t praise the KitchenAid 5KSMPRA 3-Piece Pasta Roller and Cutter Set enough for its sheer build quality and sophistication. It is easy to set up and easy to use. It produces great results and is easy to clean.
